Fairfax Jury Awards – 1.1 Million Dollars to Injured Person

In the case of Washington v. Hoffman, a Plaintiff who was represented by Fairfax lawyer, Thomas B. Morrison recently received a 1.1 Million Dollar jury verdict. That jury verdict is among the largest jury verdicts in Fairfax County in 2012.

This case involved an employee who was working at a loading dock at Fort Belvoir, Virginia. During his employment the Plaintiff had occasion a use a mechanism known as a dock plate. As he was using the dock plate and removing the product from the truck the dock plate unexpectedly came up catching his leg between the item that he was removing from the truck and the dock plate. As a result of this incident, the Plaintiff had severe leg injuries which almost resulted in amputation of his right leg.

At trial, Plaintiff alleged that the Defendant had improperly lubricated the dock plate at the time that they had serviced it approximately one month before the accident took place. The Defendant alleged that they had not lubricated it and if the dock plated had been lubricated, that it would have failed immediately, not after a month. After ten hours of jury deliberation, the jury returned a verdict in the amount of 1.1 Million Dollars for the Plaintiff. This was one of the largest verdicts in Fairfax County in 2012.
